Maldives-Land Tour Photo Gallery

In late March and eary April 2012, we traveled to the Maldives. Our primary objective was a cruise on the Carpe Vita live-aboard dive boat. However, because our travel time was over 24 hours, we decided to stay at the Bandos Island Resort for four days before and after the dive boat trip.

The Maldives is an island nation in the Indian Ocean off the south west coast of India. The nation consists of 1,200 islands over an area of 35,000 square miles. The largest city of Male has a population of approximately 100,000 people.

The average ground level of the country is 5 feet above sea level with the higherst point being only 8 feet above sea level.

Historians believe that the original Maldivian people were Hindu seafarers from southern India and Sri Lanka. However, Islam was adopted in 1153. The country came under British protection in 1887 and was a dependency of then-colony Ceylon until 1948. The Maldives gained their independence from Britain in 1965.
