In September 2001, we toured England. While there, we visited London, Portsmouth,
Lyme Regis, Stonehenge, Alkerton, Bowness-on-Windermere (in the Lakes District),
Bourton-on-the-Water (in the Cotswolds),
Dartmouth and
Portland.
Interestingly, we were in front of Buckingham Palace watching the changing of the guard on September 11, 2001. Click the following link for a brief description of our experience on that day. Our 9/11 experience Despite the tragic events that occurred, we had a great time in England. The country has it's own unique character. London is a very busy crowded city. In Canada, most city streets are laid out more or less on a north/south and east/west grid. This doesn't seem to be the case in London. Many narrow winding streets make keeping your sense of direction a difficult task. However, the Victorian architecture and many attractions make it a fascinating city to visit. The countryside is just what you would expect. The plentiful rain ensures that fields and well maintained gardens are lush and colourful. The many narrow, winding roads with stone fence borders make driving an interesting experience. Every town and village seems to have warm and friendly pubs and tea houses. Their B & Bs are also different from our previous experience. Although we don't have extensive history with B & Bs, those that we have experienced in Canada seemed like you were renting a room in someone's home. The British B & Bs were more like friendly small boutique hotels. They were a wonderful treat! Share our experience in the following pictures: |
